Fractional CO2 lasers are the gold standard in non-surgical skin rejuvenation. Individual results vary, but patients can expect 40-70% improvement after treatment, especially in the eyelid areas, where the skin is thinnest. Dr. Levin utilizes the AcuPulse Fractional CO2 Laser by Lumenis™, a pioneer in the field of laser technology. The AcuPulse features state of the art technology with 11 various modes for truly customizable treatments. Treatments can be deeper, with more healing and more downtime, or shallower, with less healing time. The deeper the treatment, the better the results, generally. However, some patients prefer to have more treatments that are less aggressive to shorten the recovery.

What is the recovery?
The recovery time varies depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment and can range from 5 to 10 days. Universally, there is some crusting, oozing and scabbing. Especially around the eyes, swelling is expected during the early recovery. Once these resolve in a few days, mild to moderate redness is normal. Redness usually lasts for 2 weeks, improving to a pink hue and disappearing over time.
Am I a candidate for it?
Patients with lighter skin tones make the best candidates for laser resurfacing. During your consultation, we will ask you to fill out a questionnaire that will categorize your skin into a specific type. Patients with Fitzpatrick skin types I – III are the best candidates.
Ablative laser resurfacing is not a good idea if you have active acne, as it can become more inflamed.
Ablative laser resurfacing is also not recommended for darker skin tones, as there is a greater chance of post-procedure discoloration. If you have a darker skin tone and want to improve the skin appearance, consider a non-ablative treatment such as ResurFX, microneedling, or chemical peels.
What is the procedure like?
First, we numb the skin with a topical anesthetic. The numbing cream stays on for about 45 minutes to gain full effect. If desired, a mild oral sedative is also available for further comfort.
Next, we apply the laser, during which time you will feel a warm sensation in the area that is being treated. The duration depends on the surface area, average 20-30 minutes to treat the face. Once finished, the skin will feel warm, almost like a sunburn. You will get specific directions for a post-treatment proper skin care regimen.
When will I see results?
You may see results as early as 2-3 weeks but as with any treatment that works by stimulating collagen production, it may take 6-8 weeks to see the final improvements.
When you have the treatment matters
Laser-treated skin is often more sensitive to sun exposure. Therefore, autumn is considered “laser season” because it allows up to 9 months before the sun comes out in full force. Wearing sunblock is advised after laser treatments even during the fall and winter months. If you decide to have treatment during the spring/summer months, you will have to be extra cautious and diligent with sun protection.
