What Is Morpheus8?

Morpheus8 is a device that combines microneedling with radiofrequency technology for fractional resurfacing that stimulates collagen production. By targeting the deeper layers of the skin, the building blocks will reorganize themselves in a natural anti-aging process. Because the needles are coated, and the radiofrequency energy comes out from the very tip of the needles, there is little to no damage to the dermis, and this procedure provides a highly uniform effect.

Morpheus8 Treatment Areas

Morpheus8 can be used on any area that can benefit from sub-dermal renewal. Areas of the face and body that exhibit wrinkles or discoloration are suitable for treatment. Morpheus8 is effective in the treatment of acne scars as well as active acne. The most commonly treated areas include the face and neck. However, other areas such as the abdomen, knees, and arms, or any part of the body with loose skin that could benefit from tightening.

What Is the Benefit of RF Energy?

Like any form of energy, RF can produce heat. Heating the skin’s deeper layers induces new collagen and elastin production and encourages cell turnover, helping loose skin become firmer, thicker, and more youthful-looking.

An advantage of using RF to heat tissues, as opposed to lasers (which use higher-frequency light waves), is that the lower frequency of RF can safely penetrate to a deeper level, helping to improve skin tone and structure, even lifting tissues.

Lasers, for the most part, work to improve the skin’s surface. Moreover, RF can safely treat more patients with different skin tones without risking permanent discoloration.

Does Morpheus8 Work On All Skin Types?

The benefit of Morpheus8’s colorblind technology is that it can be used on all skin types. The unique properties allow even darker tones to be treated with little risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is common with other resurfacing methods.

What Is the Process of Getting a Morpheus8 Treatment?

On the day of your treatment, you arrive about one hour before we will begin your procedure, and we apply topical numbing cream.

Once this has fully taken effect, we get started after the treatment areas are cleaned. The microneedles extend and penetrate your skin at various depths, ranging from 1 to 4mm.

The depth is set according to areas treated – more shallow around the eyes and forehead, deeper in the lower face and neck.

When they reach their depth, the gold-plated tips of the microneedles deliver a pulse of radiofrequency energy deep into the dermis layer or fat layer (depending on the penetration depth).

The energy level is also set depending on individual goals. When the body senses heat and experiences mechanical injury to the dermis layer, it assumes there has been a wound, so it initiates a wound-healing response. This involves remodeling all existing collagen in the area and then beginning the production of new collagen.

Since collagen provides the skin’s structural support latticework, this tightens the skin, and then the increased collagen continues to improve d your results. We move the handpiece in a coordinated path, placing it, activating the needles, and then moving it to the next adjacent spot. This is continued until we have completely covered your treatment areas.

How long will my results from Morpheus8 last?

The increase in collagen production is a permanent change. Unfortunately, your body continues to reduce its collagen production by one percentage point every year, so you have to contend with that continuing decline when weighing your results. The improvements made with Morpheus8’s RF energy generally continue to build for up to six months. We recommend a series of treatments every 1-2 years to maintain your results.

When can I put make-up on after treatment?

Since patient downtime is minimal, makeup can be applied 1 to 2 days after the treatment. Patients should expect to see micro lesions (small dots in the skin) a few days after treatment and slight redness for up to 1 week, depending on treatment parameters.

Do Morpheus8 treatments hurt?

When you arrive at Dr. Levin’s Westport office, we apply a topical numbing anesthetic cream to the areas you will have treated with Morpheus8. This takes about 45 minutes to fully take effect. This topical anesthetic ensures you are comfortable during the treatment. Every person’s pain perception is slightly different, and whereas some people feel absolutely nothing, others may feel some pinching. The treatment settings can be adjusted to ensure that you are comfortable while still being effective.

What kind of post-procedure care is required?

Visible results can be seen within a few days, but typically after three weeks, the most noticeable results appear. Improvements continue up to three months after treatment. After being treated with Morpheus8 in Westport, CT, patients should moisturize the treatment area with a light cream such as Aquaphor or Vaniply and avoid direct sun exposure. It is also recommended that patients use a good, broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. In addition to reducing their future risk of skin cancer, sunscreens also reduce wrinkles and slow the aging process.

How many Morpheus8 treatments will I need?

The number of treatments depends on pre-existing skin condition, the settings used and how the skin responds to each treatment. Those with darker skin require lower settings and, therefore, may need more treatments. Patients tolerating higher settings may need fewer. Depending on your Morpheus8 treatment regime, you can expect to have between 2-5 sessions 1-3 months apart.

What Are the Risks of Using RF Energy for These Treatments?

An advantage of using RF energy to heat tissues and generate new collagen and elastin production, as opposed to lasers (which use higher-frequency light waves), is that lower frequency RF energy can safely penetrate to a deeper level without damaging the skin surface. Lasers generally work to improve the superficial skin layer, as that is where the energy is absorbed. This is also why RF energy is safe for patients with darker skin tones, while laser treatments can cause hyperpigmentation.

Radiofrequency energy has been studied extensively for its impact on humans and found to be safe. The main risk associated with the use of this form of energy is the potential for burns, but Morpheus8 and other RF treatments involve highly controlled delivery of RF energy with internal safeguards. These treatments and devices have been cleared by the FDA for skin tightening.

Morpheus8 Treatment with PRP

We provide PRP as a combination treatment with Morpheus8. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) utilizes the stem cells and growth factors in the patient’s blood to harness the body’s natural repairing mechanisms. When infused into the skin and tissues with microneedling, treatments of PRP in Westport induces collagen production and helps to grow and repair blood vessels, improving the rate of healing, reducing redness and inflammation, improving skin texture and tone, reducing fine lines and scars, and achieving an overall rejuvenating effect for a more radiant, youthful complexion.
