WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive way to stimulate collagen and elastin production, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and maintain plump, youthful, glowing skin.
The procedure involves using a mechanical device called a Rejuvapen® to make thousands of microscopic needle punctures in the superficial skin layers. The depth of these needles is adjusted depending on the facial area that is being treated, more superficial on the thinner skin of the eyelids and deeper on the cheeks, where the skin is thicker. Microneedling has been scientifically demonstrated to show improvement of fine lines and wrinkles, freckles and sun spots, scars, and large pores.
Microneedling is often combined with a treatment on the skin surface, such as a serum containing peptides, growth factors, vitamin C, or platelet-rich plasma (PRP), to further improve the skin quality and texture. The effect of these rejuvenating peptides and growth factors is more pronounced, as they are absorbed more by the skin when combined with Microneedling.
HOW IS MICRONEEDLING DIFFERENT FROM A CHEMICAL PEEL OR A LASER?
A chemical peel is a superficial treatment that only addresses the very top surface of the skin. For some patients, laser skin resurfacing may be the best option, but it often requires 5-7 days of downtime and is not appropriate for all skin types. Microneedling is safe to use in all skin tones and the downtime with Mircroneedling is quite short, with transient redness lasting 1-2 days.
HOW IS THE PROCEDURE PERFORMED, DOES IT HURT?
Although the idea of having thousands of tiny needles going into your face sounds painful, it is actually not. Dr. Levin uses a topical numbing cream for 20-30 minutes prior to Microneedling to keep you comfortable. The sensation is primarily that of vibration. The treatment of the entire face takes approximately 20 minutes. Immediately following the procedure, the face is cleaned and a soothing and healing cream is put on it. Your face will be red (like a moderate sunburn) and feel tingly. After-care instructions include the use of a soothing cream, a gentle face wash, and sunscreen. Patients return to their regular skin care in 48-72 hours. The improved skin appearance is noticeable after only a few days and continues to improve for 4-6 weeks.
IS IT EFFECTIVE?
Although individual results may vary, this technique has been demonstrated to be effective in reducing facial lines and wrinkles, scars, pigmentation, and large pores. For most patients, a series of treatments (3-4) is recommended, 4-6 weeks apart to achieve the maximal results.
HOW DO YOU MAKE THE TREATMENT RESULTS LAST?
As effective as Microneedling treatment is, its effect is best maintained when combined with scientifically proven skin care products. Prescription-strength retinol, vitamin C, vitamin E, and medical-grade products containing peptides and growth factors, will further improve your skin and make your treatment results last longer. We offer a variety of medical grade skin care products from Obagi, NEOCUTIS, and Regenica. Microneedling makes the skin more permeable to absorption of these vital ingredients, so the use of such skin care products after treatment is the best way to maintain great skin.
