What is Sculptra®?
Sculptra® is a unique type of filler, called a biostimulator, that works by stimulating your body to produce its own collagen and replace the lost volume. Sculptra® is made of a synthetic material used in dissolvable sutures, called poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is biocompatible and naturally absorbed by the body.
Benefits of Sculptra®
Sculptra® gives you natural-looking results because it’s your body that is doing the filling of hollow areas and lines and creases. It is doing so by producing new amounts of collagen. This is different than simply injecting volume beneath a crease.
Sculptra® also has the added benefit of endurance. Most other fillers last up to one year, often less. Our patients from Westport and the surrounding areas love that Sculptra® provides results that last for two years!
Who is a good candidate for Sculptra®?
Sculptra® is well-tolerated and has been approved by the FDA. This long-lasting filler is effective for treating fairly deep lines and creases, and it has few restrictions. If you have the typical lines that form around the mouth and from the nose to the mouth, Sculptra® is a great, long-lasting solution.
Really, the only patients who cannot have Sculptra® are those with a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring.
At what age should I consider Sculptra®?
We start losing facial volume in our late 20’s, although the effects may not become noticeable until the mid to late ’30s or ’40s. Because the results from Sculptra® are so subtle and soft, it is a good filler to start using in your 30’s-40’s as it will help you maintain what you have, hopefully avoiding more invasive treatments in the future. The result you achieve from Sculptra® treatments is your own naturally produced collagen, so it is not broken down and degraded as quickly as many of the other fillers. You can generally expect to maintain about 40% correction at 2 years after Sculptra® treatment.
Where is Sculptra® injected?
Sculptra® is effective for treating moderate to deeper lines. It is used for these typical lines and creases that develop around the mouth:
- Marionette lines (extending downward from the corners of your mouth)
- Parentheses lines (framing both sides of your mouth)
- Nasolabial folds (running from your nose down to the corners of your mouth, also called smile lines)
- Chin wrinkles
Sculptra® Injection Procedure
Sculptra® treatments involve an injection of the product into the desired area(s) of correction. It can be used in all parts of the face where volume restoration is needed (except the lips). Sculptra® treatments take 15-30 minutes and the use of a topical anesthetic makes the treatments relatively painless. Once injected, the Sculptra® particles stimulate your body to produce its own collagen, helping to restore the deep, underlying structure of the face. The result is a soft, long-lasting correction that will never look overdone.
How to prepare for Sculptra® treatment
Injecting Sculptra can cause some bruising at the injection sites. This isn’t serious bruising, but if you want to mitigate it you can stop taking any aspirin and ibuprofen a couple of days before your session. That’s all you need to do.
Sculptra® vs. other Dermal Fillers
Most dermal fillers are simply true to their name — when injected they “fill” in the area under a wrinkle or crease, pushing the skin back upwards or adding volume.
Sculptra® doesn’t work like that. It doesn’t provide instant results. Sculptra® is made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which works within the skin to replace lost collagen. Sculptra is the first facial injectable that gives you subtle results over time as collagen is replaced. This makes for a natural-looking appearance that improves over time, not an instant change as with other fillers. Sculptra is injected in three sessions over three to four months for the best results.
When will I see results after Sculptra®?
Sculptra® is helping your body produce its own collagen, therefore, the results may take a little longer to see than with some other fillers. We often tell patients to think of it as growing their hair – the changes are not noticeable day to day but rather, over a period of time. This gradual change is also more natural. Depending on the patient’s age, anatomy, and individual needs, a series of 1-3 Sculptra® treatments over a period of 4-6 months may be recommended.
How long do results last after Sculptra®?
Sculptra is the longest-lasting dermal filler providing results that last up to two years.
Recovery after Sculptra®
Sculptra is the same as other dermal fillers. You may have some slight redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection sites, but these side effects usually resolve in a few hours. Patients can return to work or their other normal activities immediately after these injections.
Potential side effects of Sculptra®
Side effects of Sculptra® treatments are rare. Temporary swelling or bruising may occur after injection, and will usually resolve in 3-7 days. Rarely, the body may overproduce collagen forming a small lump or “nodule” that can be felt when pressing on the area. Individual ability to produce collagen may vary, so the amount of product/treatments needed to achieve desirable results may vary among patients.
Is Sculptra® Right For You?
As with many fillers, it is hard to know which is the right product for you. It’s important to choose a physician that is not only an expert injector but one whose aesthetic view is comparable to yours. Make sure to have a detailed consultation explaining what you are trying to achieve and listen carefully as your physician explains their recommended treatment plan.
Remember to keep your expectations realistic and understand that several Sculptra® treatments over several months may be needed to achieve the desired correction. In some cases, a combination of different products or treatments may be recommended for optimum results.
